Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul

It’s Raining Goals

It was the feast day of Sts. Peter and Paul on 29 June. The St. Peter’s Parish Youth challenged our Parish Youth to a friendly football match. The teams consisted of nine players each. It was a rare sight to see boys and girls play alongside each other. St. Andrew’s donned a bright yellow jersey while St. Peter’s were in a full black kit. Our parish team was led by Daniel D’Souza. Before the game, there was a march past lead by the respective mascots, St. Andrew and St. Peter. Hymn to St. Andrew was sung by Ms. Maria D’Souza and the St. Stanislaus School anthem was sung for St. Peter’s.

BEEP! The referee blew the whistle to announce the beginning of the game and in no time St. Andrew’s took the lead through Raunak Killinger. It was then Ethan Campbell’s brace that put St. Andrew’s in a 3-0 lead which included a powerful long range shot from outside the box to beat the goalkeeper. Just before half time St. Peter’s netted in a lovely, hard worked chain of passes. At half time, the score read 3-1.

Dark clouds covered the grounds and there was a slight drizzle, setting the perfect tone for a game of football. St. Peter’s started the second half on strong note netting in two to equalize. But St. Andrew’s kept the scoring going, this time coming from the girls, Manisha Curzai and Tracy Gonsalves.

Soon the second half came to an end with the referee blowing the final whistle with the final score reading 5-3. There were handshakes all around. After the game, all players received a box of snacks. Our team also received a chocolate and a healing prayer.

This was much more than friendly match. It was played with full enthusiasm and a determination to win. Looking forward to playing many more games like this.
